Industrial Researcher: REGEN – spring

Realdania and Innovation Fund Denmark want to create and promote knowledge about how the built environment can become a real contributor to a future-proof and regenerative society that lives up to the obligations in the Paris Agreement.

Who?

An Industrial Researcher project is a business-oriented research project that is carried out in collaboration between a private or public company in Denmark, a industrial PhD student or industrial postdoc and a university. Innovation Fund Denmark invests both in Industrial Researcher projects within three thematic focus areas and in Industrial Researcher projects outside the three thematic focus areas.

What?

The purpose of this thematic focus is to promote cooperation between research and industry, so that solutions are created to a greater extent across both sectors and disciplines. The goal is that more companies can create growth and value in Denmark by working for a regenerative built environment.
First of all, you apply for a grant for a industrial Ph.D. or industrial postdoc. In addition, you apply to join the REGEN network, which is facilitated by BLOXHUB – see a more detailed description of the network and the theme of the network under the section “About the network”.

How much?

For industrial PhD projects, the Innovation Fund Denmarks grant can cover up to DKK 17,000 per month of the industrial PhD student’s salary. Up to DKK 100,000 for the company’s expenses for the student’s travels and participation in courses. Fixed amount of DKK 360,000 (incl. overhead) to the university. For industrial postdoc projects, the Innovation Fund Denmarks grant can cover up to DKK 22,000 per month for the Industrial Postdoc’s salary and up to DKK 2,500 per month for the company’s expenses for the postdoc’s travels. Up to DKK 10,000 (incl. overhead) for each month during the project period to cover the research institution’s project-relevant expenses.

Especially for SMEs that have not had Industrial researchers attached before

In addition to the Innovation Fund’s grant for salary subsidy, it is possible to apply for additional salary support from Realdania. This option only applies to SME companies which have not previously employed an Industrial researcher and which receive a grant from the Innovation Fund in connection to the application rounds in the spring and autumn of 2025.

Concretely, companies can get DKK 8,000 in extra wage support per month for an Industrial Ph.D. or DKK 10,000 extra in salary support per month for an Industrial post.doc.

Realdania has set aside funds so that a maximum of 10 companies can get the opportunity for this extra salary support. If the Innovation Fund gives a commitment to more than 10 SME companies that have not previously employed an Industrial researcher and that want to be part of the network, Realdania will award the wage support to those that Realdania assesses best fit the intentions of the network. An international advisory board will advise Realdania on this.

The pool for the maximum 10 companies will be cashed out, so that a maximum of 5 companies will receive the extra salary support in connection with the spring application round.

About the network

It is not decisive what educational background, theoretical direction or tradition the projects come with, but the applicant candidate must meet the Innovation Fund’s general requirements in order to obtain a grant. It is central that the applicant contributes with critical thinking, innovative thinking, research excellence and innovation. It is also an important parameter that the projects have commercial potential and can be developed on a reliable legal basis.

The individual project that is both selected for funding by Innovation Fund Denmark and selected by Realdania to become part of the network undertakes to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across the industrial research projects in the network.

This includes, among other things, the following:

  • Four annual meetings with a focus on interdisciplinary knowledge sharing, collaboration and sparring among the other business researchers in the network.
  • Two annual company visits, where the network’s industrial partners take turns inviting to a workshop focusing on the application and implementation of research in the industry.
  • Inspiration tours with interdisciplinary themes on, among other things, innovation, collaboration and communication, as well as a symposium with a focus on interdisciplinary knowledge production.
  • Training in communication of own research at communication events in BLOXHUB’s Applied Science Forum.
  • Possibility of booking meeting rooms and access to facilities in BLOXHUB, as a supplement to a workplace in company and university.

Everything regarding interdisciplinary knowledge sharing, collaboration and sparring will be facilitated by BLOXHUB.

Application process

The application is sent via E-grant to the Innovation Fund Denmarks industrial Ph.D. or industrial postdoc program. In the application form, you mark ‘Wishes to be part of the network: Towards a Regenerative Built Environment’ in the first step after the introduction.

Initially, the application will go through the normal assessment process in Innovation Fund Denmark, where the projects will be assessed by the Industrial Research Committee. Here it will be in competition with all other applications for the program. As Innovation Fund Denmark does not have the option of allocating funds in advance for the thematic focus, there will be no guarantee for a specific number of grants/projects.

The applications must follow the guidelines for the type of business research project applied for – industrial Ph.D. or Industrial Postdoc. This means that the applications must meet all requirements for the industrial Ph.D. and industrial postdoc.

When the processing of the applications is complete, Realdania will, among the projects that receive commitments from Innovation Fund Denmark, choose which projects will also be invited to be part of a network group that both supports the purpose of the thematic focus and complements each other before for the professional breadth described above.
