Investment in establishing up to four strategic research and innovation centres in defence technology and security. The centres must bring together and expand existing environments in defence technology and critical technology with a dual-use perspective, building on Danish areas of research strength, and be developed in areas that support the Danish Armed Forces’ operational needs and are necessary for Danish security of supply.

Strategic Research and Innovation Centres in Defence Technology and Security
In the period 2026–2029, Innovation Fund Denmark will invest at least DKK 585 million in establishing up to four national research and innovation centres in defence technology and security. The centres must build on existing Danish areas of strength and develop solutions that support the Danish Armed Forces’ operational needs and Danish security of supply. The funding rate is up to 90%.
The initiative is mission-driven and organised as broad partnerships between universities, research institutions, GTS institutes, companies, the Danish Armed Forces and relevant authorities. The focus is on high technological maturity, rapid development, testing and implementation, and a strong link between research, application and commercialisation.
The roadmap is the central management tool for the centres’ activities and must ensure development of the selected area of strength and delivery of concrete solutions that address operational needs in defence and security. Based on the roadmap, the centres must work with an actively managed project portfolio within Innovation Fund Denmark’s existing programmes, where specific operational needs are translated into projects with clear milestones, success criteria and stop/go decisions.
Applications are assessed equally on three criteria: the quality of the idea, impact, and quality of execution.
Application process
Phase 1: expression of interest incl. roadmap.
Phase 2: full application for invited applicants.
